LORIENT (France) Oman Sail’s Multi One Design 70 team, the National initiative’s elite offshore crew, are in full preparation mode in Lorient, France, ahead of the transatlantic delivery to Newport and then New York for the start of the Krys Ocean Race on the July 7.
Sidney Gavignet (FRA), skipper of the trimaran Musandam-Oman Sail – recently named after the famous tourist destination in Oman at a ceremony in St Nazaire – has brought American sailor Ryan Breymaier onboard to stand-in for French offshore veteran and boat captain Loik Gallon who suffered an ankle injury.
“Ryan has a similar technical profile to Loik and has the most MOD70 experience as he was a member of the Veolia Team which has been sailing for a year already. Ryan will join us for the delivery and the Krys Ocean Race as boat captain. He will also be our local knowledge!” said Sidney.
Ryan joins Fahad Al Hasni (OMA), Mohsin Al Busaidi (OMA), Khamis Al Anbouri (OMA), Jeff Cuzon (FRA), Brian Thompson (GBR) and Thomas Le Breton (FRA) for the delivery. Five of the six race crew have been named for the Krys Ocean Race, the sixth slot will be filled by either Mohsin Al Busaidi (OMA) or Khamis Al Anbouri (OMA) just before the race start in New York.
“I am very happy to be joining the Oman Sail MOD70 for the Krys Ocean Race,” said Breymaier. “These boats are incredible and the fact that the race starts in New York is an extra bonus. I’ll be proud to represent the US as well as Oman.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to expose the American public to this type of racing, while at the same time collaborating with my Omani teammates to bring such a wonderful sport to their country.
“It is nice to be part of something, which transcends so many borders, both physical and otherwise. I am certain our multinational team has the capacity to surprise everyone.”
Musandam-Oman Sail, partnered by the Omani Ministry of Tourism, has been in the water for just two months and the crew has wasted no time in notching up 23 days of sailing.
“The schedule has been busy, we have tried to sail every other day which has put some pressure on the shore crew, but has really shown how reliable these boats are,” said Sidney. “We have been focused on testing the gear and improving our sailing, we have lots to do to catch up with the other teams in terms of time on the water, but it is goingwell.”
During their preparations, the team has undergone intensive training sessions including a survival course to avoid any major injuries or incidents on board.
Fahad Al Hosni explains: “Offshore sailing is very different than inshore races. The MOD 70 is a very fast boat and racing that fast in the middle of the ocean could involve many incidents that could endanger the lives of the team. During the past few weeks we have been training and taking several survival course to help us all learn various safety elements that how to quickly respond to any major injuries on board.”

L’équipage de huit personnes est international et compte des équipiers Français, Omanais et Britannique et fait partie du projet global d’Oman Sail qui a pour objectif de raviver la flamme de l’héritage maritime du pays à travers la voile. Les trois équipiers d’Oman qui sont à bord sont rentrés dans l’élite de la course au large grâce au programme voile national d’Oman Sail. Ils représenteront leur pays sur la scène internationale.

Musandam-Oman Sail va courir aux quatre coins du globe et participera à la renommée d’Oman comme destination touristique et économique tout en inspirant les jeunes générations d’Omanais à suivre le mouvement. » a conclu le PDG d’Oman Sail, David Graham.
Musandam-Oman Sail est sponsorisé par le Ministère du Tourisme et la sous-secrétaire, Son Excellence Maitha Al Mahrouqi, également présidente d’Oman Sail, considère que le circuit des MOD70 est le vecteur idéal pour soutenir le Sultanat : « Nous voyons le circuit des MOD70 comme une plate-forme innovante pour améliorer la visibilité d’Oman comme destination touristique de premier ordre. La Krys Ocean Race et l’European Tour devraient attirer une audience de 350 millions de téléspectateurs dont 75% en Europe, ce qui colle parfaitement à notre stratégie globale. Notre bateau Musandam va être la vitrine de nos atouts touristiques en faisant vibrer les foules. Nous voulons que les gens voient Oman comme une destination arabe authentique où les visiteurs découvriront que la beauté a une adresse. »
